Korea Concept was shown today between five designers; four womanswear designers (DOHO, Son Jung Wan, Steve J & Yoni P, and Lie Sang Bong) and one menswear designer (Juyoung Lee). They were all were chosen by an international panel consisting of figures from CFDA, FIT, IMG Fashion, and WWD. This presentation took place at the Avery Fisher Hall Section of Lincoln Center, and I’m sure everyone in attendance could agree it was all about the details and styling. Don’t get me wrong, the collections could have easily stood on its own, however the fact that they knew when to do what and not allow anything to over power another made it all magic.
From the simple muted tones and knotted shouldered ruched garments that were paired with crimped out layers shown, to the front chignon hair knotted styles that were worn w/almost anime designed pieces. Whomever styled the collection, or maybe even the designers themselves-knew that the busier garments needed simple, and the more relaxed pieces could use a little drama. Before I even get into the intricacies of the wardrobe I think Concept Korea needs a moment for the accessories. The tights were AMAZING!!!! From rainbow tattoo bottomed tights, to what seemed like skeletal bones. It was simply perfection. NOt to mention the fan bags w/ lazer cut-out detailing, or the organic tulled shoes that everyone gasped over.
The Men’s collection was tres interesting. Although not my style, I know the customer. Very daring man, masculine yet secure enough to wear tangerine and or a kilt. He does exist, lol. I did enjoy the designers take on a tuxedo jacket and the harem pant I think i may seek, having said that the rest of the collection, easily can be placed in Jefferey’s or Opening Ceremony. As far as the ladies collections, although there were the two extremes featured between the softer palette and heavy ruched design and the almost harajuku meets anime collections- there were also two very classic collections as well. One featured a brilliant blue above the knee voluminous new way bubble hem that was breath taking, while the other collection had ranges of floral, but done in a very tasteful downtown way.
All in all this was a presentation worth watching as the moments of dullness never came. Between the female DJ’ known by her famous moniker BeckaDiamond cutting it up on the 1’z and 2’z, and the constant stream of optical non illusion, I sincerely look forward to every concept Korea ever has. So long as it isn’t of the regime type. Freedom to the prints!
