‘Twas the first day of Fashion Week, lots of creatures were stirring. Kids were heading back to school, policemen were gathering for 9/11 memorials (and security) and there was nary a cab in sight for all the sleepy-eyed Fashionistas awakening to catch the show. I scurried across the piazza in front of Lincoln Square at two minutes to nine, heart aflutter, yet still made it to The Nicholas K show which like me was not on time.
Ready to start contemplating your wardrobe for Spring 2012? Then loose layers, the look for which designer Nicholas Kunz is celebrated, is what you ought to consider. Her amorphous styles, give off a carefree vibe and the new collection is true to spirit.
Models hit the runway first in brighter shades of white while just beneath jumbo free-form jackets the ladies showcased an assembly of light, almost translucent, slip-style dresses trimmed on a diagonal, oozing that campy edge that not too girlie girls can pull off.
Then, through a subtle progression, pairings of soft tops, drawstring pants, shawls and other outerwear were introduced to the audience in an array of earthy gray, blue and green tones. To lighten the mood there were occasional hints of patterned and textured fabrics including several iterations of tie-dye, fringes and mesh. Show stoppers included the steel-gray asymmetrical trench, black leather short-shorts and a royal blue silk dress.
It’s never easy to be the first one up to the plate during Fashion Week, but the brother and sister team behind the Nicholas K brand delivered a fabulous impression, one that inspires an urban casual chic flair.
