The Academy of Art University in San Francisco, opened its doors in 1929, and now currently host over 17,000 students. The University has presented their top graduates designs under the tents since S/S 2005. This season marked the schools 10th appearance, and they made sure not to disappoint.
On Friday, February 11th, I was fortunate enough to view the designs of Holly Smith, Minha Yoon, Stephanie Gelot, Hurst Chang-Wei Lin, Dejchat Sriyoopum, Jonathan David Baker and Aura Taylor.
The first designer, Holly Smith, was inspired by diving water birds. Her designs weren’t bad, I just hated the boots paired with the outfits. *sighs* Sorry… the boots drove me over the edge. “When bad shoes happen to a good outfit” The boots were very distracting… I wish the footwear was more muted.

The next designer up was Minha Yoon…who, according to the university’s website, was inspired by lights and shadows?! Hmmm… let me go look through the pictures again.
…ok I am back. Lolll
Miss Yoon… I see how the concept translated into the clothing. After reviewing the pictures, I felt as if your clothing could be worn by sexy, secret, female spies…
…someone poking through the shadows… maybe Angelina Jolie or Winona Ryder would wear this collection. I liked it a lot!

Next, Stephanie Gelot, who was inspired by “Nomadic Tribes”. UMMM… hmmm, ok. Let me go and Google nomadic tribes….
…ok I am back. Lolll
Ok, this collection wasn’t one of my favorites. I feel as if it is a little all over the place for me. Like, it could have went Romantic Hippie, or Shabby Chic…. But instead it went type , rolled out of bed, because I have a headcold! How is a girl supposed to find Mr. Right wearing these pieces?!
Individually, the collection had some pieces that could have stood alone… but together, it was too much to process. Side Note: I really liked the grey scarf shown at the beginning of the collection and/or 2nd from the right in the picture above.
I am sorry Stephanie… I wish I had more positive things to say. I will check for you next season.

Next, Hurst Chang-Wei Lin. Inspiration: history and art of alchemy in mind.

Lin… ok I totally feel your inspiration and see where you were going with this line. Now, that I know the inspiration…. I love this a lot. My favorite pieces from this line were the first two coats. I am not sure if to call them trench coats or quarter length coats. They had a simple, very astute design. Good Job Mr. Lin.

Next up, Dejchat Sriyoopum. Inspiration: Elegance. HMMMM… not so much. This collection was not one of my favorites. I like the final coat… that was cute, but I wouldn’t label it elegant. I am sorry Dejchat… I hate not liking collections.

Next, Jonathan David Baker. Inspiration: “Japanese underground culture”. Wow… well if the Japanese wear this type of clothing underground, then it’s time for them to emerge above ground.
I got a Carrie Bradshaw feel…. This collection was rebellious…. This was my favorite collection out of the seven designers. I wanted more, but Jonathan didn’t give us enough. Dear Jonathan, you are wonderful… continue on with your promising career in fashion!

Finally, Aura Taylor…. Whose inspiration was “Futuristic”. I did really like this line, but what stopped it from being my favorite was…. I felt as if Aura could have brung more drama. Like, Aura, if you are reading this…. your clothes that you presented, are wearable NOW. Like screw the future… let’s get you into department stores right this instance! When I think of Futuristic, I think of the clothing looking so different, it makes me feel uncomfortable…. but on the other hand I can’t avoid it, I can’t take my eyes away from it… but I am far too safe in my own clothing to make the leap. That is the definition of futuristic!
I hope this point seems clear…. hmmm. Ms. Taylor, you are extremely talented! I look forward to seeing you work for Chanel or Gucci…. right before going on to build your own house!
My absolute favorite was the trench coat…. I really want something similar to it in my price range 🙂
