J. Mendel usually renown for its furs as everyone who is someone has to have one. After this seasons showing at Lincoln Center for Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week, its obvious he’s more than just a one trick furry pony. This season was all about the heavily trended colour blocked shirt dresses with thin belts. Thick blocks of green, white and yellow as well as varying tones of purple against black and white all with sophisticated edge and balance.
Expertly folded dresses and gowns proceeded silky separates that looked suited for simple errands but when seen up close there’s no way you can do anything other than luxurious living in fabrics that chic. The summer bolero furs were also a nod to the 5th generation fashion house that helped put the J.Mendel brand on the platform it so gloriously enjoys til this day.
The deep V neck gowns and side sliced dresses all very modern and although not consistent with the legacy of the expected design format, it was refreshing to see how focused the company is in its growth and direction. Although I enjoyed the colour palette in its entirety, the last group that came down the runway in its abominable snowman like silhouette was kind of nice for that chilly Hampton’s all white end of summer foray at the beach. These days it’s all about choices and when a brand straddles hot and cold temperatures so effortlessly while still holding on to the designers integrity, it’s totally something to behold and watch very closely. Don’t know about you, but I’m adjusting my lenses a little more come February F/W 2013.
