Project New Yorker: Karen Klopp

Are you stuck for the perfect outfit? Can’t decide what to pack? Karen Klopp founded what2wearwhere.com to save women time by simplifying the shopping, traveling, and dressing process that consumes up to a year for the average woman. Karen has plenty of versatile options on her site, it’s in fact, “The only website where you can find a fabulous evening gown and a fly fishing rod.

Karen’s original plan was to write a book and create a companion website. However, she created a blog that was an immediate success. Karen finds inspiration for her blog everywhere; Paris, African safaris, and Italy; but her main source of inspiration is from the NYC sidewalks. She emphasizes that NYC is the holy grail of style. She said “Walking on the streets is like getting a PhD in fashion.” During our interview… Karen wore a stylish, reversible Hermes belt, dark jeans, and a cute and comfy button down shirt.

Karen is surprised at how the fashion industry has changed to accommodate the changing world. When the recession hit, Karen started advocating cheaper brands; such as Target, Gap, and Topshop.  Her online traffic was certainly not on a standstill. Karen religiously updates her site, so that women can find up to three fashion suggestions a day. She’s looking to make it even easier for busy women, by creating a phone app to make her site more directed towards the phones and less the computer.  In addition, she would like to make her website globally accessible by creating offices around the world. She hopes to make her site the go-to-site, side by side with weather.com, to make it the first thing one looks at when getting dressed. After Karen and I finished talking business, I got to ask her a couple questions regarding her life outside of the Blog.

Cosette: What would be the one thing she would take with her if she left NYC?

KK: Madison Avenue.

Cosette:  Have you met your Mr. Big?

KK:  (With a laugh) Yes, we’ve been married for 27 years and have three children.
