MBNYFW: Y-3 S/S 2012
Attending a Y-3 show during Fashion Week, you can never expect a dull moment. Yohji Yamamoto continues to push the idea of sportswear becoming a part of the non-athletic customer’s wardrobe. Y-3 held their show this year at the 82 Mercer Street venue, where spacious area allowed the collection to flaunt its true flair. As I think of Y-3’s previous collections, I can definitely recall a sense of their presentations as “over the top” but they do it well. Being unconventional is a huge concept for Yamamoto, and if the show being held away from Lincoln Center was not a sign, then the collection definitely displayed that.
The Y-3 collection for the Spring/Season came across very dramatic, but genius in its own way. There was a constant blend of formal wear, and sportswear. As some women sported cotton blazers of dense colors, and wore shorts resembling those of the finest athlete, the men on the other hand were given a more casual approach as the breakers; cotton tees and screen-printed tees were shown throughout the show. Staying true to the Y-3 tradition, this collection produced an imperial effect of dark edginess that can remind you of the Goth student of your morning literature course. Light does shine through the collection, where you can spot quilted knits of the Irish kilt pattern and tank tops and sports bra of brightly colored hues. Yamamoto does offer the best of both worlds with his work this season.
Dramatically the show began after its scheduled time, but the collection makes up for the tardiness. Y-3 never ceases to amaze me, as their creative ability to merge formal high-fashion aesthetic and sportswear to produce casual street wear never gets old. They have found their niche, and they are sticking to it. The collection may not be for everyone but it will definitely satisfy some.
