MBNYFW: VLOV by Qingqing Wu S/S 2012
Now we reach the discussion of one of my favorite topics, menswear. Tonight Vlov by Qinqing Wu presented their Spring/Summer collection, and to my surprise, the line took a very executed approach towards changing the conventional look, menswear is associated with. As the lights dimmed, queuing the music to begin and the audience to cease their murmuring, the first piece made its début on the runway. We (audience and I) were greeted with a nylon short-sleeved shirt, with an attached belt. After seeing this piece I knew the show was going to be a little different.
The pieces of the collection mirrored a mix between bespoke clothing, and your favorite rocker’s closet. As the color range did not go any higher besides cerulean, the real focus of Wu’s collection was his intricate design. One of my favorite pieces was dark grey jacket, with silk lapels and zipper detail. The show embodies transitional clothing that can be worn to the most formal, and casual event. Although the collection pulls together the concepts of modern, edgy menswear, it lacks in vivacity and color contrast. As a color buff, yes I would attack the color spectrum, but as a whole the collection came across very modern with the subtraction of the palette.
Needless to say the shoes of the collection were awesome, as the heel feature of the shoe was removed, leaving three-quarters of the hind foot exposed. I would surely like to see the sophisticated business man wear this collection, and will not be surprised if I spot the collection in the streets of the Upper East Side. Although the collection is different, it provides the male with a new spin on the old-age tradition that is menswear.
